Recently a group of friends and I attended the Rankin Brothers show. To be perfectly honest, I was practically forced into the situation. I wasn't really feeling up to going out and I had a pre-conceived notion that the brothers would be your mediocre, run-of-the-mill, take 'em or leave 'em type of entertainers. I could not have been more wrong!
From the onset, the Rankin Brothers dominated your attention. They perform a variety of music from the 50's to the 90's...all great selections, I might add. Most shows have a gimmick...none here; these boys are pure entertainment. Once the show started, I got started (as did many other members of the audience). These were songs that I, as well as every other baby boomer, hold dear to the heart...songs we grew up with... memories... nostalgia...and all done to perfection. We were not only singing along...we were moving and yes, even dancing in the aisles. The entire audience (which included all ages) appeared to really be getting into the music.
The show covered everything from "Summertime Blues", "Wake Up Little Susie", "Pretty Woman", "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin", to "Taking Care of Business". Matt does an excellent Buddy Holly impersonation and Mark, after many attempts, gets to do his Elvis impersonation complete with a beautiful replica of the original eagle suit. I thought this would be a comedic touch (there are several during the performance), and Mark looks nothing like the King...but he does a surprisingly exceptional job on Elvis' songs! We also get to sing "I Got You Babe" along with Sonny and Cher! Funny to watch, but with excellent vocals!
The Rankins also share the stage with their three lovely back-up singers, The Rankinettes, who get to perform several of the 'girl group' songs, which, again, are done beautifully. The back-up band is a group of extremely talented musicians who prove to be versatile with vocals as well as adept in their musical expertise. There is also a segment featuring Mike Bliss demonstrating his flair in juggling, pick-pocketing, riding a unicycle, and general comedic genius.
There are a couple of compelling numbers performed during the evening that holds you in such rapt attention, you could almost hear a pin drop. These are "The Sounds of Silence" and "Starry Starry Night". There are so many more songs played throughout the show and although they are too numerous to mention, be assured that they are favorite classics!
It would be remiss of me not to mention that The Rankins do a Gospel tune, "The Anchor Holds", with a wonderful background scene that was totally awesome. The performance along with the scene blew me away! Totally beautiful!
After the evening's performance, Mark and Matt come out to the lobby with the Rankinettes, Mike Bliss, and, perhaps a band member or two. They will visit, sign autographs, and pose for pictures. After speaking with them for just a few minutes, you feel so comfortable around them, it's like talking to a friend or a favorite cousin. They are so down to earth and genuine...a quality that's rare in many performers.
This is a show I can recommend without reservation. Even if you're having an "off" night, this is the perfect way to snap out of it! Personally, I can't wait to return to this show. These guys rock! You can catch The Rankin Brothers and the rest of this highly entertaining cast at the Welk Resort Theatre, 1984 State Highway 165,Branson, MO. 65616
