Liverpool Legends - Best Band and Editor's Choice for Best Show
|
|
The Liverpool Legends are fast becoming Branson Legends, as evidenced by the fact that the group was awarded the highest honor given by Branson Critic Online Magazine Editor’s Choice for 2007, as well as the Branson Critic Fan Award for Best Band of 2007!! The presentations were made by Chad Ray, representing the magazine, on Friday evening, November 2nd. Before presenting the awards, Chad read a few excerpts from reviews that were written in support of the show:
“What you have here is the cream of the crop out of all the tribute bands….not only are they seasoned musicians, but they also have George Harrison’s sister, Louise….HIS REAL SISTER…….she gave me a Harrison hug……..I will never stop smiling about that…..
It was magical…..and so are these guys….they have put together a show that leaves all the troubles and pressures outside of the Caravelle Theater and lets you go back to a time when the message was peace and love…..
I have been a Beatle fan all of my life and if you are in Branson you have to see this show…..twice……..once to see the best show in Branson and the second time to prove to yourself that you weren’t dreaming…..”
He also quoted a portion of an editor’s review “I truly admire their many talents, whether it is their singing, joking around, or their amazing musical expertise. I’m especially astounded by the fantastic Beatle sounds they are able to replicate. Beatle fans from all over the country have commented on the realism of the Liverpool Legends.”
Another editor wrote, “These guys have it all down to an art John, Paul, George, and Ringo are portrayed with stunning accuracy by Kevin, Davey, Marty, and Greg. The resemblance to their respective counterparts is amazing in appearance, actions, and stage presence.”
The Fab Four, along with Bob Dobro, Bob Rumba, and, of course, Louise Harrison, accepted the awards enthusiastically, yet graciously, thanking Branson Critic, their fans, and those behind the scenes who help to make the show a success. The Lads also thanked Louise for “putting us together,” to which Louise responded, “and for putting up with you!” They also sincerely thanked the Mock family, who own the Caravelle Theater and “helped us out from the get-go we couldn’t have done it without you. God bless you and thank you very much.”
The Liverpool Legends, comprised of Davey Justice as Paul McCartney, Kevin Mantegna as John Lennon, Marty Scott as George Harrison, and Greg George as Ringo Starr…..deliver a fast paced, fantastic, and truly magical ride through the complete era of the Beatles. Beginning with Bob Rumba’s spot-on portrayal of the legendary Ed Sullivan, the audience is held spellbound throughout the show……from the opening songs of the early 60’s, such as “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” “Hard Day’s Night,” and “Can’t Buy Me Love,” as well as fun tunes like Ringo’s “Yellow Submarine,” complete with a small yellow submarine suspended in the air. The rockabilly hit, “Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby,” had everybody up and dancing!! And again, at the close of the first half, “Twist and Shout” caused everyone to do just that!!

The second half of the show focused on the psychedelic era of the mid-60’s and featured “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” One of the highlights of the evening was the fantastic blinding light show displayed during John’s brilliant performance of “A Day in the Life.”
1968 brought us “Here Comes the Sun,” sung so beautifully by George, “Get Back,” “Revolution,” and, of course, “Hey Jude,” featuring Paul at the piano. No cigarette lighters waving about here, though these days it’s cell phones!! How times have changed - and yet they haven’t. The Beatles’ music is as popular today as it was 40 years ago. Timeless, to be sure.
The show is interspersed with the comedy of Bob Rumba as Ed Sullivan, and Bob Dobro as “Paul’s grandfather,” who also does a fantastic job performing percussion, orchestrations, and sound effects on the keyboard. Film clips of “Brits” singing their renditions of Beatles songs are hilarious. And one cannot say enough about the skills that are shown in playing the authentic vintage musical instruments that are used by this unbelievably talented band.
This show will make you scream, it will make you laugh. It will make you want to get up and dance, even if you have two left feet; and it will make you want to sing, even if you can’t carry a tune in a basket! You won’t be able to sit still, and you won’t be able to stop smiling it just might be the happiest place in Branson!!
Since The Liverpool Legends hit town nearly two years ago, their popularity has skyrocketed. Congratulations from all of us at Branson Critic to everyone involved in the success of this incredible show. Marty said in his portion of the acceptance speech, “It’s an honor to be here and we’re here to stay. We’ll be here next year and the year after that and the year after that!” That is good news, indeed, for Branson entertainment. Our thanks, too, to Louise Harrison and to the Mock family, for bringing us this fabulous show. This one is definitely a keeper!!
Between the time the above-mentioned awards were presented and the time this article was written, there has been a change in the location of the show, formerly at the Caravelle Theater, for the new 2008 season. The Liverpool Legends will open on April 1st at the Starlite Theater we wish them continued success with this wonderful show in their new venue.

Tony Roi's Elvis Experience - Best Show, Best Singer/Performer
|
|
Music City Centre was buzzing with excitement as friends and fans of Tony Roi, along with representatives of Branson Critic Online Magazine, gathered together on Monday, October 29, 2007, for a very special evening. Tony and his fabulous show, The Elvis Experience, were once again the recipients of the Branson Critic Best Show award, and Tony, himself, received the award for Best Singer/Performer, as he had several times in the past.
Chad Ray, representing Branson Critic, first presented the award for Best Show of 2007, after reading the following quotes from the many fan reviews received regarding Tony Roi’s Elvis Experience:
“Tony’s TR Powerhouse Band is one of the best bands in Branson…. Kelly Black, Gary Freeman, Dino Phillips, Lance Griffith, and of course, the beautiful Angel Singers, are awesome…….
Music City Centre is a fantastic venue that allows you to feel like you are having your own private audience with Tony and his exciting group of musicians….the TR Powerhouse Band is second to none, the music they create together has no equal crisp, clean, and precise the energy level they bring to the show makes you feel like standing up, dancing, and singing along with Tony and the whole group….the lighting during the show is top notch, tasteful, and complimentary…..the whole show is magical and unforgettable…..
When you leave the venue after one of his shows, you leave with only one thing in mind….. ‘when am I going to come back?’…..it’s quite obvious, after seeing Tony, once is never enough….it’s addicting and once you are bitten by the ‘Tony Roi Bug,’ you are hooked for life….”
Chad then read several more quotes from fan reviews regarding Tony, after which he presented the award for Best Singer/Performer of 2007:
“Music has always been a part of my life, but when I saw Tony’s performance, I was reminded that only a few musicians are as gifted as Tony Roi….when he appeared on stage, I was blown away….Tony looked like Elvis, sounded like Elvis, but when he sang with that compassion from his soul, he made the show his own…..

I am completely deaf….however I was fortunate enough to hear some of Elvis’ music prior to my hearing loss….I was able to recognize many of the songs that Tony performed….at one point in the show, he came down off the stage, held my hand, and sang to ME….I think I was floating at that point….I know it may seem pointless to some of you that a deaf person would attend a music show….I may not have been able to audibly hear Tony Roi, but I felt the music with my heart and it was beautiful….it is an experience I will never forget….
Tony has a great heart and a beautiful spirit within him that he can’t help but pour out all over his audience….I think Elvis had that same spirit….when we met Tony after the show, he told me that what he tries to convey to the audience is the Elvis that HE wants to remember….and it is GOOD…..”
Tony graciously expressed his heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the members of his band, the Angel Singers, his technical crew, and, of course, to his beautiful wife, Melanie, and their children, who were there with him on the stage. He especially thanked Branson Critic and the fans who wrote in to vote for him and his show, saying “I’m just going to continue doing it until you guys tell me - that’s enough!” He thanked God for giving him his talent and the opportunities he has had in his life. He told of the dream he had ever since childhood of becoming a performer and a singer, crediting Elvis as being a “tremendous vehicle” for him, and emphasizing that he always wanted people to accept him as an entertainer and a vocalist who was doing a tribute to Elvis Presley, not trying to become Elvis Presley that there was only one Elvis, and there is only one Tony Roi - however, Tony feels that he and Elvis had the same passion. Tony let everyone know how much he loves to see the smiles on their faces, feel the joy of the applause, and hear the many compliments he receives every day, saying it’s a wonderful feeling to have. Further thanks were given to his Fan Club for their love and support, and also to Crystal, Sherri, Larry and Judy for being a part of the team that stands behind Tony and his show. Special mention was made that Richard Bliss was in the audience that night everyone who knows Richard has had him in their prayers and Tony announced how grateful everyone is that Richard has been declared cancer-free. Lastly, Tony talked of the privilege of being counted among so many great entertainers in Branson, and he sincerely thanked David Sandy for giving him the opportunity to pursue his dream in the theatre at Music City Centre.
The lights go down, the excitement is at a peak, the curtain opens, and Tony appears on stage, looking and sounding so much like the King, himself, that no matter how many times you see this show, you will never quite believe your eyes and ears! From the first notes of “A Little Less Conversation,” and the announcement that “This is a Tribute to the Man and his Music Elvis Aaron Presley,” starting in 1954 where it all began in Memphis, Tennessee with “That’s All Right, Mama” and continuing on through the later years, Tony’s huge talent is evident throughout the show. Whatever he chooses to sing, whether it is the early rock ‘n’ roll classics such as “Hound Dog,” and “Blue Suede Shoes,” or his magnificent renditions of “It’s Midnight” or “Just Pretend,” or soul-touching gospel songs such as “How Great Thou Art,” Tony has mastered the King’s repertoire from 1954 until 1977. He has added “Steamroller Blues” to the show this year, and I must personally thank him for that one!! Tony singing blues could only be described as “scorching” he could be performing on Beale Street in Memphis, and Elvis and BB King would be proud!!
The Elvis Experience incorporates dozens of legendary Elvis songs into the show, however, Tony’s talents as a songwriter are also showcased and you will get to know the other side of Tony Roi. His original songs - “Your Eyes Started the Fire,” “Don’t Walk Away,” and “Back on the Road Again” have become as familiar and favorite to Tony’s fans as any of the Elvis music.
Tony’s Powerhouse Band is truly the best. Veteran musician Gary Freeman who has had an impressive career, even touring with the one and only Van Morrison some years back, is amazing on the keyboards he is also Tony’s conductor; the incomparable Dino Phillips who is well known in Branson dazzles us on the drums and also sings harmony with Tony; Lance Griffith, new this year on lead guitar, had been a singer/songwriter in Nashville before coming to Branson; and the ever talented Kelly Black - everyone knows she “plays her bass guitar with attitude” - had the honor of being named Best Musician for 2006 by the fans on Branson Critic. These superb musicians blend together to produce some of the greatest sounds in Branson. The Angel Singers, Stephanie McKinney and Dana Courier, also new to the show this year, do a fantastic job singing backup for Tony and have become an integral part of what holds this show together and makes it so great.
Tony’s fans have come to love each and every one of the people who make up the Elvis Experience. The band members, as well as the Angels, are often seen outside the theatre after the show……..talking with fans and signing autographs while Tony is out there doing the same thing. This added personal touch only adds to the long list of reasons why people return to this show time and time again. Tony and all of those involved with him seem to work fluidly as a team, supporting each other and coming together to create the success of Tony Roi’s Elvis Experience. Mention must also be made of all the people behind the scenes of this terrific production Tony personally thanks every one of them from the stage, acknowledging that the show could not be the success that it is without those who are in charge of the lighting, the sound, his photographer, even the ushers and those who help at the merchandise table - these people are just the best.
Tony Roi’s new season begins on Monday, March 10th at 8:00 p.m. If you are reading this and you have not yet experienced “The Experience,” please put this wonderful show at the top of your list of shows to see in 2008 - it is an experience you won’t soon forget. You will even be given the opportunity to have your picture taken with Tony on stage a keepsake you will surely treasure. Tony has had quite an interesting life, and I would urge everyone to pick up his latest DVD “The Journey.” It traces Tony’s career for more than twenty years and it will make you all the more appreciative of what this gifted man has accomplished throughout his remarkable journey. More importantly, you will see that Tony sincerely loves what he does and that he really cares for all of those who share his love of Elvis and his love of music with him. As Tony always says, “it’s all about the music.”
A hearty congratulations to Tony Roi’s Elvis Experience from all of us at Branson Critic, on being named Best Show for 2007, and to Tony, himself, for winning the Best Singer/Performer award for 2007. Year after year, you continue to provide Branson with the quality of entertainment that cannot be topped and year after year, your fans reward you by voting you top honors from Branson Critic!!
Thanks, also, to David Sandy and Music City Centre for, as always, presenting the best of the best in Branson. We were all a little sad to learn that David has moved on to other pursuits and will not be with Music City Centre in 2008 he will be missed and we wish him the best in the future. However, it is our understanding that his position has been ably filled by Timothy Haygood, and based upon what we already know about all of the Haygoods, we are certain that it will be a new and exciting time at Music City Centre. Everyone is looking forward to good things in 2008!

Brad Allen, Best Musician
|
|
On Tuesday, October 30, 2007, Chad Ray represented Branson Critic Online Magazine in presenting the Branson Critic Award for Best Musician 2007 to Brad Allen, drummer for the Branson Brothers Variety Show.
He read the following fan quotes before presenting the award:
“Simply stated, Brad Allen of the Branson Brothers Band is the best…..in any show, the drummer has a very important role to fill…..not only do they have to keep the beat, they have to be up on all the happenings on stage to deliver not only on the music selections but on the comedy skits also…..Brad does this and then some……….
Brad is an incredibly talented musician that pours his heart and soul into every piece he plays…..this is evidenced each time he takes the stage…..his passion and love for what he does is readily apparent…..
Passion for music is something that can be seen and heard in the way the music is performed………Brad is one of the most passionate musicians I have heard in Branson…..not only can you see that he is enjoying himself…..he wants to make the show the best in town…….

“Gimme a Beat” is the phrase that should be emblazoned on the shirt of drummer Brad Allen……….whether it is country, rock, or beating his way through the decades, Brad does a great job as the timekeeper for the group….the Branson Brothers should count their blessings to have such a gifted and talented drummer working for them………”
Brad thanked everyone and Branson Critic for noticing the music acts in Branson, and also thanked the rest of the band members for making him sound so good. He said it is great working with them, and he was glad that everyone enjoys hearing them.
Congratulations, Brad, from everyone at Branson Critic!
The music the Branson Brothers Band creates is amazing, and they definitely have a magnificent group of musicians who always produce magnificent sound! Way to go, guys!!!

James Garrett, A Tribute to John Denver - Editor's Best Morning Show
|
|
On Monday, October 29, 2007, Branson Critic representatives were guests at the IMAX Little Opry Theatre’s morning show, A Tribute to John Denver & Other Country Legends, starring James Garrett!
Wow until I saw this show last spring, I’d forgotten what a great artist and performer John Denver was - who hasn’t heard his music at one time or another, or seen one of his movies?
In 1965, as a member of The Mitchell Trio, John was growing weary of his demanding concert pace and wrote a song that in 1969 became his first #1 hit recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary, “Leaving on a Jet Plane.” It seems the song was really telling everyone how his life had become, “I’m leaving on a jet plane, don’t know when I’ll be back again, oh, babe, I hate to go………”
But go John did. He went on to perform and sing for those millions of fans who fell in love with his artistry and music - until his untimely death on October 12, 1997, ironically, in an experimental aircraft that crashed off the coast of California.
Performing songs in tribute to John Denver, James Garrett reminds us of John’s incredible talent, and the uncanny ability he had to take us with him to wherever it was he was singing about whether it’s down country roads in West Virginia, through the windy wheat fields in Kansas, up the mountains of the Colorado Rockies, or “to sail on a dream on a crystal clear ocean.” Yes, John’s music takes us on quite the journey! He especially loved the grandeur of the great outdoors and fought hard sometimes for its preservation.

During one of the most recognizable John Denver songs, James had everyone singing along, and a lucky audience member, Mary, playing the spoons. We all could feel the joy and ecstasy of being a child again and first discovering one of the best things about going to grandma’s house “It was nine feet high and six feet wide, soft as a downy chick…..we didnt get much sleep but we had a lot of fun…..on grandmas feather bed!” I was surprised to learn from James that John did not write that song!
A personal friend of John’s, James is sincere when he shares interesting tidbits about him during the show. He told us about what inspired him to write several of his songs, and also when or where a few were written. He also tells some of the best memories he has of John, and times he was blessed to be at many of his concerts at home or on the road.
James included some of the more emotional songs, too, that John sang about love and life telling us that “some days are diamonds and some days are stone.” He had everyone feeling the warm rays of the sun on a cool autumn morning in the Ozarks, as he strummed his 12-string guitar and sang…..“Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy, sunshine in my eyes can make me cry, sunshine on the water looks so lovely, sunshine almost always makes me high.” And I could feel a tear well up in my eye while he sang John’s folk classic….”Today, while the blossoms, still cling to the vine, I’ll taste your strawberries, I’ll drink your sweet wine…….a million tomorrows will all pass away, ere I forgot all the joy that was mine, today.” Again, WOW! I’d totally forgotten that amazing song!
Before the break, James also shared a song from his own gospel album, one of my favorites since I love acoustic guitar. I was absolutely mesmerized during his wonderful and inspiring solo performance of “Praise His Name!” If you are ever down in spirit, this is certainly a song to pick you right back up!!
Interspersed throughout the show, James introduced each one of the cast members who performed numerous selections made famous by other country legends.
We were treated to the Hank Williams’ hit, “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” and an old gospel tune made famous by the Carter family, “Far Side Banks of Jordan,” both sung by Randy Plummer. A recent gospel award winner for his composition “Angel Wings,” Randy has had a longstanding career in Branson performing in many shows around town. He is always a joy to see and hear as he sings and plays his upright bass. James calls Randy P. “the happiest man in Branson,” always smiling and it is contagious!
We were delighted to see and hear the lovely Lori Locke, who sang several classics - James Taylor’s “You’ve Got a Friend,” Crystal G ayle’s “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue,” and Patsy Cline’s “Walkin’ After Midnight.”
C.J. Newsome graced us with “Three Wooden Crosses,” a song made famous by Randy Travis, and the famous hit by Dolly Parton, “Jolene.” John Denver sang duets with many artists during his career from Kermit the Frog to Placido Domingo C.J. and James gave us a beautiful rendition of a song he did with Olivia Newton John, entitled “Fly Away.”
Randy Rudd is an absolutely amazing talent both vocally and playing guitar. He sang several numbers and gave us a few imitations to boot. We enjoyed Jim Croce’s “Don’t Mess Around With Jim,” Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried,” and Randy’s “performance in pink” of the Kendall’s hit “Heaven’s Just A Sin Away“ was, well, something else, too! (It seems he’s the only one who can hit the high notes in that particular song that early in the morning!) He delivered an impromptu request of Tompall Glaser’s “Put Another Log on the Fire,” and an absolutely fantastic performance of Roy Orbison’s “It’s Over” (more high notes)! Randy can also be found singing lead for the Sons of the Pioneers Show.
Rick Quincey pounded out a few incredible instrumentals as he showed us his hammered dulcimer abilities on “Oh, Them Golden Slippers,” “Somewhere My Love,” and a lively polka called “Red Wing.” He is also a fine banjo picker and fills in skillfully on steel guitar and almost every other instrument onstage.
James related to everyone how he came to be in Branson and also at the IMAX. He introduced Paul Bluto, the owner of the IMAX and his wife, Ann, and called Paul onstage to entertain us with a very funny composition of his own, “Don’t Should On Me.” The whole audience was laughing as we even got to sing a chorus line or two, carefully! He also recited a couple of inspiring poems.
Another surprise guest, Leroy New, who has the 2:00 show called News Country in the same theater, masterfully presented Chet Atkins’ “Mr. Sandman,” and then launched into a rousing rendition of “Under the Double Eagle!” Be sure and catch this afternoon show sometime!!
Needless to say, James and company took us on a most enjoyable and exciting ride through John Denver’s classics as well as those of other country legends. Just before the award presentation, James sang the memorable John Denver song that had us all thinking of the one we love the most - from Annie’s Song, “come let me love you, come love me again.”
And so, as the show drew to a close, Chad Ray was called onstage to present the Branson Critic Online Magazine award for Editor’s Best Morning Show 2007, to James Garrett and the cast of A Tribute to John Denver & Country Music Legends.
He read the following quotes from fans of the show before presenting the award:
“Now in Branson there is an amazing new live morning show that pays tribute to John Denver……..I have completely fallen in love with this show………
The entire cast is professional, extremely talented, and very relaxed as this wonderful show plays out with no script………
James Garrett knew John Denver and he shares his memory of the times he spent with him....the things you or I would ask John, James has already asked…...what inspired him to write?…...how long did it take?…….where was he when he wrote it? James answers these questions during his daily tribute to John Denver………
The beauty of this show is that James does not try to sound like John Denver…….instead he sings with the clarity and passion that John did and his guitar playing is masterful……James presents an honest reflection of what John’s songs were all about……..
Chad continued by reading the following quote from an Editor:
“Take yourself to this show, sit back and relax and if you listen very closely and close your eyes, you might just catch the spirit of John Denver, who left such giant footprints on our musical history…..”
James accepted the award and said he had told the cast “don’t be surprised if we never win an award because we are in such a small theater, and that we really can’t compete with the 2000 seat theaters. And so, when Chad walked in and said we’d won Best Morning Show, it was just a really great surprise!” He thanked Paul and Ann Bluto, saying that “success is just an opportunity given by someone who believes in you. And they believed in us so thanks to them and several others here today to all those who help to promote the show, the cast, and my brother Rick on sound, my sister, and my Dad and his wife who are also here today! Thank you, everybody!”
By the way, you might have noticed by now, this article is very long well, as Paul Bluto said when onstage for pictures “it’s not only the best morning show in Branson, it’s the longest!!” You certainly do get your money’s worth at this show.
Concluding the award celebration and show with the hand-clapping, foot-stomping, “Thank God, I’m a Country Boy,” James and cast sent us all out with a smile on our face and a feeling of lightheartedness, joy and happiness.
Congratulations, James, from everyone at Branson Critic! And also to your fantastic cast - Randy Plummer, Randy Rudd, Rick Quincey, Lori Locke, C.J. Newsome and Kasi Means (who was unable to attend the award show), and all those at the IMAX Little Opry Theatre who are involved with the production of this fabulous show!!
Yes, this show will start your day off with a smile and may even put a “spring” in your step for the rest of it. You might even find yourself humming a John Denver tune the rest of the day - there’s nothing wrong with that!!! And when your time in Branson is over, and your car, bus, train or plane turns homeward maybe you’ll find yourself humming another John Denver tune….. “Hey, it’s good to be back home again.” I know we’ve all probably had that feeling even after being on a great vacation in Branson, Missouri still, there’s no place like home!
Oh, one more thing - when I got “back home again” to Kansas, I dug out my old John Denver albums and listened with renewed appreciation, marveling once again at the talent of John Denver and his music forever classic, unique and timeless!
This show is due to start its new season on February 5th, so make plans now to attend!!!

SIX - Editor's Award for Best New Show
|
|
SIX amazing real life brothers who make up the group SIX were this year’s recipients of the Editor’s Best New Show award which is given annually by Branson Critic online magazine. On Thursday, November 1st, Chad Ray, representing Branson Critic, shared a few quotes from fan reviews before presenting the award:
“I had heard locals and tourists talking about this phenomenal, spectacular show and had to go see for myself….you can’t help but be amazed when you realize that all the instruments you hear are the brothers, themselves, making the sounds of the instruments….they are the best….
I was blown away by their performance….there is no way you can pick a favorite, as each one of them is so talented and unique in their own way, but together they will take your breath away…..
Nothing would have prepared me for this….bright colors, dancing, wonderful music to take you back or bring you forward….genuine family appeal….that is what this show is all about….I wish I could see it all over again…..
Branson needed something different and refreshing….we are so fortunate to have the Knudsen brothers, known as SIX, here….their show is exciting, full of so much talent, and leaves you wanting to see it again and again…..SIX scores a TEN…..”

Chad also quoted some comments by our editors:
“These SIX real brothers wow audiences with their incredible vocal skills Owen’s beatboxing, percussion sounds are awesome, as is Jak’s booming bass. The vocals from Lynn, Barry, Kevin, and Curtis are equally impressive, and while each of the six have their own solo moments in the show, their harmony together is exceptional. They are a pure delight to watch, as they incorporate a lot of humor into their interaction with the audience and each other. With so many shows to see in Branson, this show is a top draw.
I could think of a lot more than six adjectives to describe this show astounding, unbelievable, outstanding, remarkable, inspirational, extraordinary, sensational I could go on and on. One word to describe SIX they are just plain COOL!”
The group thanked Branson Critic and their fans, saying that they had no idea what their first year in Branson would bring, it has been a crazy year, and it has far exceeded their expectations. They also emphasized that they couldn’t have done all this without their wonderful parents. Their love and dedication to their parents, especially their mother, who passed away several years ago, is evident in their video clips, featuring the beautiful song, “Love Times Ten,” written in her honor.
It is difficult to accurately describe this show! Suffice it to say, you have to see/hear it to believe it. At first, there is skepticism how can human beings reproduce the actual sounds of musical instruments with any convincing quality? Answer I have no idea, but these guys do just that very convincingly. When the show begins, you will find yourself listening closely to try and distinguish what exactly is going on maybe to find a glitch here and there, to figure out who is doing what!! Soon, that is all put aside, because you will be drawn into the show itself, and you will forget that there is no live band hidden behind the curtain, no tape track playing somewhere in the background just SIX extremely and uniquely talented men who hold your complete attention for two hours.
This show takes you on a musical tour of the country, from New York “On Broadway,” to Philadelphia and doowop sounds “In the Still of the Night,” on through New Jersey where they “Walk Like a Man” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry.” New Orleans brings a combination of Satchmo and Sinatra’s “Wonderful World,” and with Motown in Detroit, they “Heard It Through the Grapevine.” In Las Vegas, you might hear “Danke Schoen” from Mr. Wayne Newton, himself, and “It’s Not Unusual” to catch a glimpse of the very sexy Tom Jones. California and Orange County let you feel some “Good Vibrations” by the Beach Boys, and they may take you right on down to “Kokomo.”
SIX is interspersed with hilarious comedy banter between the brothers….Jak, in particular, steals the comedy show with his absolutely insane antics (no offense, Jak!) Quite by accident, Jak picked Chad from Branson Critic out of the audience to have a bit of fun with. Having never met Chad, he had no idea that later in the show, THIS GUY was presenting the group with their award. My sister, Sandi, also an editor for BC, was sitting next to Chad. Naturally, Jak thought the two of them were husband and wife NOT!! Sandi’s husband, who is also named Sandy, was sitting on the other side of me!! By the time all of this was explained to Jak, Chad was sitting alone on the edge of the stage, and Jak was completely confused!! The audience was in stitches, and later on, when Chad appeared on stage to present the award, Jak was pretty shocked to see him there!! The whole thing played out like it was scripted, but nobody had a clue!! By the way, that whole scenario took place during Jak’s performance of “I Can Be Your Hero,” which, even with all the silliness going on, showcased the fact that this man has a terrific singing voice!!
Silliness aside, talent abounds within this group. Each of them has their own qualities, their own style, their own specialties in replicating various instruments, but, as stated by one of the earlier fans, together they will take your breath away.
The second half consisted of beautiful Christmas music, and listening to these six brothers, you would think you were inside a magnificent cathedral filled with a very large choir but it is just SIX. At the close of the show, there was a most moving dedication and thank you to our veterans, past and present, and a powerful rendition of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” Not a dry eye in the house.
One of the brothers, I can’t remember exactly which one but I’m sure he spoke for all of them, said that their Dad taught them that the real meaning of Christmas was going out and giving of themselves………I think they took that to heart, and they do that every day with this outstanding show.
Congratulations to SIX from everyone at Branson Critic on winning and very much deserving the award for the Best New Show of 2007. We hope you stay for a very long time.

The Haygoods - Best Variety Show
|
|
Sunday evening, October 28, 2007, Chad Ray, representing Branson Critic Online Magazine, presented the fabulous Haygoods with the Branson Critic Editor’s Award for Best Variety Show of 2007.
Chad read the following quotes from fan reviews before presenting the award:
“They bring the younger generations to Branson…Branson is COOL again, and I think that is mostly due to the popularity of the Haygoods…..they are doing what they love and following their dream…..they are an inspiration to everyone…God has truly blessed this family…..
Few performing groups can make it 16 years in the music industry and still know how to rock out a show like it was their first night on stage….the Haygoods are one such exception….no other show I have seen yet on the Branson strip can come close to matching their energy….”
He also quoted one of our editors, who wrote, “This family continues to amaze audiences with their undeniable talents as musicians, singers, dancers, and gymnasts. They incorporate such a variety of music and dancing into their show there is truly something for everyone. Even when there are unavoidable circumstances, such as injury or illness among them, they can still manage to put on a first-rate professional show. Loyal fans of the award-winning Haygood family have been touting their praises for years, and with good reason.”

The family happily accepted the award, represented by Timothy Haygood, who said, “Thanks to all the fans for voting for us….it’s been a long ride and we’re still having a lot of fun, and we plan on continuing that next year.”
Sadly, 2008 will be the last year to see this outstanding family in the city where they have performed for the past 16 years. These kids (most of whom are now adults they range in age from 14 to 30) have been the bright lights of Branson since 1993. In each of those years, they have presented two different shows, making a total of 32 shows.
Every performance showcases music from every genre from foot-stomping country fiddle playing to the quiet beauty of “The Ashokan Farewell,” my personal favorite, to jazz, “jivin’ and wailin’,” and the unforgettable Blues Brothers and way back to big band music, the Beatles, the Eagles, and even Elvis.
I must mention the incredible musicians who back up this group the extremely talented Gary Freeman on the keyboard, and the unbeatable, unforgettable Dino Phillips on the drums….these two guys deserve a lot of credit for the success of this show.
Along with the music, there is the “energy” the Haygoods tire you out just watching them during their “breathtaking” displays of tap dancing and acrobatics what they call “The Haygoods’ Weight Loss Program!! There is even a little “poetry” in the mix!!
Every one of these 7 brothers and 1 sister is talented on several instruments, including violin, piano, guitar, saxophone you name it, they play it!! Catherine even displays her skills on the harp, one of the most difficult instruments to master. It makes you sit back, shake your head, and ask “how did one family receive so many gifts of such incredible talent?” I once said to their father, “you must be so proud,” he simply answered, “there are no words.”
So congratulations Timothy, Patrick, Dominic, Shawn, Michael, Matthew, Aaron, and Catherine from all of us at Branson Critic. You truly earned the award for Best Variety Show. And to everyone out there who has never seen this show……..be sure to put it on your “to-see” list for 2008…………it will be your last chance to enjoy this wonderful family of entertainers before they move on to bigger and better things.
Last, but certainly not least, thanks to David Sandy and Music City Centre for continuing to bring us such fantastic entertainment!

Kirby VanBurch, Best Magic Show
|
|
On Saturday, November 3, 2007, Molly Donohue represented Branson Critic Online Magazine in presenting the Branson Critic Award for Best Magic Show 2007 to Kirby VanBurch, The Prince of Magic.
She read the following fan quotes before presenting the award:
“If you are a parent, or have children or teenagers……….there is not a moment in the show that will not hold each of them captive as Kirby and Bambi work their magic. Kirby and Bambi have absolutely nailed it! They continually display illusions that will keep you guessing for the rest of your life. Kirby totally seems to relate to both me and my parents at the same time! (Now there’s a miracle.)
Kirby VanBurch has mastered the art of illusion and will certainly mesmerize you…..and then there is Bambi, Kirby’s beautiful wife…….she has a special brand of pixie dust and a Tinkerbell smile all her own!
I’ve seen several of the magic shows in Branson, but Kirby’s show is the best by far……it’s also one of our favorite shows, regardless of category magic or otherwise…..a great magician with an even greater message….put this show at the top of your list!”

Kirby accepted the award with pride and in the spirit of all the other great shows in Branson who, he said, were all deserving…..he thanked his cast and crew, and especially thanked all their fans for voting for them.
Everyone enjoyed the illusions performed by Kirby and Bambi during the first half of the show, and the wonderful and magical Christmas Spectacular, featuring the comedy of Phillip Wellford, during the second half of the show. The ad-libbing by the cast was especially funny, the singing and dancing was marvelous; the magic was, of course, stupendous, while the serious message of the Christmas Season was a perfect start for our holiday season.
We were then treated to a backstage cat tour, which was very exciting. Thank you, Kirby and Bambi, and congratulations, from everyone at Branson Critic!

Terry Sanders, Best Comedian
|
|
On Tuesday, October 30, 2007, Chad Ray represented Branson Critic Online Magazine in presenting the Branson Critic Award for Best Comedian 2007 to Terry Sanders.
He read the following fan quotes before presenting the award:
“To say that Terry Sanders is funny goes without saying….he continues to go to extremes to deliver the laughs to those of us seeking relief from the day to day routine we call life….he chooses to poke fun at life and sets us up to not take things quite so seriously…..he makes us laugh if not at ourselves, then at each other…..
Terry is such a great impersonator…..he can do anything they ask him to do. We have seen Terry perform for the past 10 years and believe me he has talent like no other and we have seen them all……Terry is a better Joan Rivers than Joan herself….
The Comedian of the Year crown should stay with funny man Terry Sanders………...he totally deserves to remain at the top of this mountain……everyone appreciates a good laugh and Terry has a gift of reading people and turning everyday situations into something hilariously funny…….
All the funny would not mean a thing if not for the man underneath the funny……...Terry is a wonderful person and I am honored to know him and call him friend……”
Chad continued by reading the following Editor’s quote:
“We took our cousins to Silver Dollar City…..Terry was there in his deputy outfit. I don't know of any comedian that works as many venues……or as much as he does on his characters. It seems that he has a goal to try to put a smile on everyone’s face.”

Terry thanked everyone and said, “It’s been such an honor to have been working in the wonderful town of Branson for 28 years - someplace you can bring your family, and it’s an honor for me to receive this award.” His family was also in attendance, and he stated what a blessing that was for him.
Then, during Terry’s award speech, “someone” who looked somewhat like a “protestor” appeared onstage wearing a tutu costume with a “Wannabe Comedian” sash, and holding a sign high that read, “Will Tell Jokes For Food!” We’re not really sure if we should mention it seems “Harley Worthit” (haha) - but Terry and everyone in the audience cracked up!
Terry expressed his thanks again for receiving the award, and thanked his fans for voting for him.
Congratulations, Terry, from everyone at Branson Critic!
Branson Critic representatives enjoyed a fabulous time at the show, with the Branson Brothers - Jimmy Ponder, Dee Allen, and Andre Shepard performing fabulous numbers from country to gospel. Diana Ponder and Natalie Nicole sang some wonderful solos, as well as a duet together.
Doug Gabriel is always a showstopper, whether he’s singing, playing - or both! His featured guitar solo, “Malaguena,” always proves to be unbelievable!!
Homer Lee, Grandma Beulah, Shoji, the Siamese twins, Harley Worthit and others were all on hand to celebrate with us, and to make us laugh!
We highly recommend the Branson Brothers Show!!
